Can anyone explain how English Football (Soccer) leagues work?
i.e. which is the top league in order through to the bottom league. Maybe a tier or something like that.

Barclays Premier League - 1st
Coke-Cola Champion League - 2nd
The Football League 1 - 3rd
The Football League 2 - 4th
Blue Square Premiership - 5th
Southern Football League - 6th
Isthmian League - 7th


The top 3 teams from each lower level league advance to the next league up (i.e. If a Championship League team finishes in the top 3 next year they will be in the Premier League) It works in reverse to the bottom 3 team get relegated to the next division down ( so if a League 1 team finishes in the bottom 3 they will be moved down to League 2)

2. Championship (but not Champions League, which is the European club championship.)

Remember when 'premiership' and 'championship' had totally different and distinct meanings? The damned English are ruining the language.

3. League 1 (not 'League 3' which would be logical. Calling it 'League 1' is a pathetic insult by the English against the French Ligue 1.)
4. League 2.
5. Blue Square Conference Premier
6. Blue Square Conferences North and South.

2.-4. are also called the Fizzy Pop divisions.
