Default What types of advertising work best for local small businesses?

I own a local small insurance & financial services agency and would like to know what types of marketing are most likely to draw the interest of local households? (Postcards, office sinage, incentive programs, free coffee & doughnuts?)

You probably know word of mouth is your best local advertising. The key is to make your current customers want to tell their friends and family about your company. Great customer service is the easiest way.

We have used postcards with ads saying bring in this postcard for a "free, no obligation" whatever. That way we can track if they are worthwhile or not. (some are, some aren't) We also use cheap methods like putting our name & ph on pens and fridge magnets, free for the taking in our office or some times we include them in mail we send to our customers.

It's more expensive, but we also co-sponsor a youth sports team. Those kids are wearing our name, phone # and website address everywhere they go. We have added new clients from this sponsorship. Plus we have a few trophies and photos on the wall in office. They remind people that we are one of them.

We have just started looking into offering free seminars for potential clients. We haven't actually done it yet, but it looks promising.

We also donate school supplies to the local elementary school each year. And included in that is a pen with our name and #. Some of the teachers get upset with us about the pens, but our ad is not on the notebooks, pencils, folders or other things we supply.

We are in a very small town (2200 people) and the things we do allow us to serve our customers and make a decent living.

Good Luck
