Default Do you think consumer electronics are programmed to fail?

It seems that with the advancements in technology, TVs, DVDs, iPods etc. should last a lifetime. There are no tubes anymore to leak, no big honkin transformers etc. I suspect that the very chips that control these devices are "programmed" to allow voltage spikes, or some other condition that makes them fail so they must be replaced. Anyone agree? All it takes is a counter and when the value hits a certain number BAM! Your device kills itself.
